Before you hand over your manuscript, you should make sure that the editor you select is someone you can work with.  Someone who will improve your work, not change it for the sake of change.  Someone who knows the difference between affect and effect.  Someone who will make sure that Andrew on page 10 didn’t turn into Andrea on page 64 (unless, of course, he did).
